Avon’s Citizen’s Police Academy still has openings
Avon – The Avon Police Department will be hosting the fourth annual Citizen’s Police Academy starting September 10. There are still a few openings for citizens to join this exciting course.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to walk in a police officer’s shoes, and see what the job is really about. The fun, educational, and interactive courses allow our citizens to learn how to investigate crime scenes, detect an impaired driver, learn some hands on self-defense skills, learn about SWAT, visit the county jail, shoot our weapons at the firing range, and learn how to make a difference in our community,” said Lieutenant Greg Daly.
The Academy will take place on Mondays from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. starting on September 10 and concluding October 15.
During the academy’s six classes, the following presentations and interactive demonstrations will take place:
• September 10th: State of the police department, crime statistics in Avon, community policing philosophy, Criminal Investigation Bureau and crime scene investigation to include fingerprinting, latent prints, dusting and black lights.• September 17th: Verbal Judo and verbal de-escalation techniques. In addition, firearms training simulator will allow candidates to understand lethal force encounters and the use of force continuum.• September 24th: Alcohol and Drug Recognition training and DUI enforcement.• October 1st: Special Operations Unit (S.W.A.T), use of force, and self-defense.• October 8th: Tour of the Eagle County Jail.• October 15th: An evening with firearms instructors at the firing range.
Participants must be eighteen years of age or older due to the subject matter; live, work or volunteer in the Town of Avon; have no felony convictions; have no significant or recent misdemeanor convictions; and are willing to complete a waiver of liability.
